Separation 1 - Chromatography
Fill a 250 mL beaker with approx 35 mL of water.
Cut a piece of chromatography paper about the size of the example. Try to straighten it out
Put two dots side by side with a crayola marker on your chromatography paper high enough to be above the water level but not a lot.
Fold a strip of chromatography paper over your pencil so that the excess will sit in the water.
Set the chromatography paper in the water with your pencil at the top of the beaker to keep it from falling in.
Watch it while doing the next two separations.
Separation 2 - Filtration and Distillation
Fill a 50 mL beaker with 10 grams of the sand and salt mixture.
Add 30 mL of water to the beaker. Stir it well.
Set up the funnel over the evaporating dish with the filter paper. Be sure to use a properly folded filter paper in the funnel. If you are unsure, ask your teacher.
Stir well with a pencil or pen
Empty the contents of the beaker into the funnel with the filter in place.
Once the liquid has completely moved through the funnel, remove the filter paper, clean it, and set it on a paper towel at the front of the room to dry. Rinse out the funnel.
Place the evaporating dish on the hot plate (remembering where you placed it). You will need to start separation 3, but keep an eye on your evaporating dish.
When all the water has evaporated, remove your evaporating dish with crucible tongs carefully and set it on the counter to cool.
After separation 3 rinse and dry everything, then put it back. Throw away the filter paper and rinse out the filter. Rinse out and dry the beaker.
Separation 3 - Filtration
zero the digital scale with a 250 mL beaker on it.
Fill your beaker about half full with the dirt mixture.
Find the mass of the dirt. Record it below:
Place all the dirt into the top sieve and gently tap the dirt down into all the layers of the sieves. Keep the lid on the bottom.
Find the mass of the contents of each sieve (one at a time) inside your 250 mL beaker. Remember to zero the scale with the empty beaker on it, and then carefully pour the dirt in the beaker.
Each time discard your dirt into the discarded dirt bucket. Record the masses here:
